Media Evaluation Question 1
In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
There are lots of different codes and conventions for music magazines. First of all I will focus on the front cover which is the main part of any magazine because it is the first part that people see.
One of the first codes and conventions is that the title is normally one word or one letter ; this means that my magazine is right because my title is just ‘Popular’ which is one word. They then say about the title being positioned top left and full page width, which my title is. The next one is that the largest text is on the front; I have done this because my title is in the largest text of my whole music magazine.
One of the codes and conventions is that the picture should not be smiling because then it conveys attitude, but I am doing a pop music genre magazine which is like a ‘cheesy’ magazine so the target audience are teenagers who would rather buy it if there is a person on the front smiling and with attitude instead of the people on the picture looking mean. Another one of these is about eye contact which is said to convey attitude also, but, as with the last one, because of my music magazine genre the people on my front cover can convey attitude without putting buyers off.
The next one is that there should be one main image and that it is usually a medium close up shot. A medium close up shot is that the picture will have the shot of people being cut off at the waist (showing head, shoulders and above the waist); my front page main picture shows exactly this.
The second part of my music magazine is the contents page. The first code and convention for this is that pictures all have page numbers by them which all of my picture do, apart from the picture which goes with the competition to win a JLS hoodie. The next one is saying ‘use headings to divide up contents’ which I have done for the features and the regulars. One of the codes and conventions about having a main image on my contents page is followed by me using the picture of The Saturdays. Also there are smaller pictures as well which is what the next code and convention is.
Looking at colours, they say that the background should be white or simple which is what I have on my contents page. Also, at the top of my contents page, two of the codes and conventions say that there should be the title of your music magazine on your contents page and also the word ‘Contents’ - I have both of these. For the features and the regulars the order should be page number and then text which is what my features and regulars are like.
The third and last part of my music magazine is a double page spread. The first code and convention is saying that one of the two pages has to be covered by a picture; on my double page spread one page is covered by pictures - I have done a collage as my double page spread image. The next one is that the writing has to start with a drop cap which my writing does and it shows the reader where they should start reading and also it drags the reader in.
I have brief information at the top of the page about The Saturdays which is the stand first. The headline needs to be a new creative headline like mine is: ‘The Saturdays on weekdays’ – this is a play on the bands’ name. The next code and convention is to do with the layout; my layout is right because I have three columns for my story. Also, my headline goes across the two pages like it is supposed to.

Media Evaluation Question 2
How does it represent social groups?
The social group for my magazine is pop music fans. This is shown by the different images that I use like using two girls on the front rather than boys as girls tend to like ‘pop’ music more. Also, the pictures that I took are all images that would be associated with pop music, because they are of pop music bands / singer, e.g. The Saturdays and Pixie Lott. The other images are of things that are still to do with music such as the JLS hoodie, the award and the microphone. For my double page spread the language of the writing is informal and is easy to understand because it is nice and simple and also has simple vocabulary and short sentences.

Media Evaluation Question 3
What kind of media institution might distribute to your media product and why?
The kind of media institution that might distribute is the magazine companies and magazine producers. I think that the company that producers 'Top of the Pops' magazine would be the company that would produce mine. I think they would do this because the target audience of their magazine audience is the same target audience that my magazine is.

Magazine Evaluation Question 5
5. How did you attract / address your audience?
To attract my audience I mainly used my front cover. I considered what attracts my target audience to want to read my magazine and that is to do with: the colours used; an exciting title, an interesting main image, etc. To start off, the colours that I used on my front cover were bright / bold colours to drag the reader in. The title ‘Popular’ has the word ‘pop’ in it which keeps the good theme of the pop music genre. Also, it is saying that it is or should be a popular music magazine which makes it sound successful. The main image of the two girls smiling makes the reader want to read it because they think that the girls look friendly but the picture is also a little bit cheesy which is what pop music apparently is. The main cover line ‘a mission to fame’ makes the reader want to follow the journey with the band / singers.
The magazine addresses the reader by speaking to them using words and images. This is mainly to do with the double page spread but also involves the rest of the magazine. Using slang for some of the text makes it more informal which is what a magazine should be, otherwise the reader should just read a book. It also attracts teenagers. I have used standard English so that mainly everyone will be able to understand it and not get confused with what it is trying to say. Also, I used words like ‘you’ to have a direct connection with the reader.
Overall, I think that my music magazine works well because it attracts and addresses the reader very well so that would mean that lots of people would want to read it. Also it keeps the reader interested with all the pictures and the storylines so they would not get bored once they were reading it.

Media Evaluation Question 7
7. Looking back at your preliminary task what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to your full product?
From my preliminary task to my main task I have learnt and progessed a lot. Starting with meeting deadlines- I have realised that I have to hand my work in on time to get the best mark and to make sure that I can then go straight on to the next task.
When I think about coming up with ideas to do with: what pictures should I have, who I should use as my model on my front cover, etc. I have learnt that if I slow down and think carefully I can then make a great magazine and come up with great ideas.
When I first started my preliminary task I was not that used to taking pictures of my own to use on my magazine and I found it quite hard to work out which photographs I wanted to take and how and who I wanted the models or objects to be. As, I went on to my main exercise I got more used to thinking about and taking the photographs that I wanted to use on my music magazine and so my planning and the style of my photos got better.
I learnt ways of getting ideas off others by using questionnaires and asking what other people think and then using that to help me understand what I should do in my magazine. For example, two questions I asked were ‘who is your favourite band or singer?’ and ‘what is your favourite colour?’. The one about the favourite colour gave me what colours I should have as my colour scheme for my magazine and the question about favourite band or singer gave me an idea about who I should write about for my double page spread story. So, I found the questionnaires I asked very useful in helping me make my music magazine.
